Cuban-Style Hot Dogs

During a recent trip to Miami I had the good fortune to stop at a small family run Cuban sandwich shop that offered something called a Cubano Dog or Cuban-style hot dog. The picture looked good so I gave it a try.  It was delicious!

I don’t know if they actually serve hot dogs like this in Cuba, but the Cuban-style hot dog is based on the famous Cubano sandwich that is made with a combination of sliced roasted pork, ham, cheese and slices of dill pickle, grilled between two pieces of hearty Cuban bread.

To make your own Cubano or Cuban-style Hot Dog start by grilling your hot dogs over low to medium heat. Just before they are done, lay a slice or two of Swiss cheese on each of your open face hot dog buns and then top with a slice or two of ham.  Next broil the buns in the oven until they are nice and toasty and the cheese is hot and bubbly. Then add a hot dog on top of the Swiss cheese and ham. Top with a dill pickle spear, thin slices of red onion, and a line of yellow mustard and enjoy! It’s a remarkably yummy hot dog!


4 beef hot dogs
8 slices of Swiss cheese
8 slices of deli ham
4 buns
1/2 of a red onion, sliced thin
4 spears refrigerator dill pickles
Yellow mustard


To make your own Cuban-style hot dog, start by cooking your hot dogs on the grill or broil in the oven for about 5 minutes or until warm.

Lay hot dogs buns on a baking sheet, open, and lay two pieces of Swiss cheese and two slices of ham inside the bun.

Just before the hot dogs are done, place the buns in the oven and broil until the buns are toasted and the cheese is melted.  Place the hot dogs in the buns and top with a pickle, sliced onions and mustard.
