Hawaiian Hot Dog Recipe
Our Hawaiian Hot Dog Recipe is inspired by a strange Hawaiian food called a Puka Dog. It’s a hot dog inserted into a tube made out of bread. The inside of the bread tube is toasted on a metal rod. Then the condiments are squirted into the tube before the hot dog is inserted. If that’s not strange enough, the condiments are a wild mixture of the traditional and the tropical. Here is our attempt to recreate this Hawaiian tradition.
This Hawaiian Hot Dog Recipe doesn’t involve a tube made out of bread, but the flavors are very similiar.
1 Package Hawaiian Sweet Rolls (KING’S HAWAIIAN Original Sweet Mini Sub Rolls are the best!)
1 cup Hawaiian Pineapple Salsa
Hawaiian Pineapple Salsa
To make your own pineapple salsa follow the recipe below. Prepared pineapple salsas are often available at your local grocery store or you can buy the delicious Robert Rothschild Farm Pineapple & Habanero Sauce from Amazon.
1 Fresh Pineapple, finely chopped
2 tsp Honey
To make your own Hawaiian hot dog, toss all of the ingredients for the Hawaiian Pineapple Salsa together in a non-reactive bowl and let sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes to let the flavors meld.
Meanwhile, heat hot dogs on grill on medium heat and lightly toast Hawaiian Sweet Rolls.
When hot dogs and buns are heated, place hot dog in bun and top with a generous about of the Hawaiian Pineapple Salsa. Prepared pineapple salsas are often available at your local grocery store or you can buy the delicious Robert Rothschild Farm Pineapple & Habanero Sauce from Amazon.
