Blackie’s Hot Pepper Relish for Hot Dogs
Folks in Connecticut are serious about their hot dogs – this is a place where hot dog purists like their dogs skinless and ketchup is not allowed. While there a many hot dog stands that top their dogs with a brown meat sauce, a super-spicy hot pepper relish seems to be Connecticut’s signature hot dog topping.
Many of these hot pepper relishes seem to have been inspired by the legendary stuff from Blackie’s Hot Dog Stand pictured here that’s been made by the same family using a top-secret family recipe for the past 80 years. This is our best guess of what might go into Blackies Hot Pepper Relish.
3 lbs. (14) red peppers, remove seeds
2 lbs. (20) hot peppers, leave seeds in (we used jalapeno)
14 onions, good size
1/2 box brown sugar
1/4 c. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 tbsp. allspice
6 c. cider vinegar
