New Jersey Italian Style Hot Dog Recipe
The Italian style hot dog is a favorite throughout New Jersey, especially along the Jersey shore. Its delight is found in its simplicity and complementary flavors. An Italian style hot dog is an all beef grilled hot dog topped with caramelized onions, peppers and potatoes. Many of my friends from New York say the New Jersey Italian Style Hot Dog is synonymous with summer.
This recipe for New Jersey Italian Style Hot Dog captures the best of this regional hot dog, however it seems like every hot dog joint in New Jersey offers it’s own unique take on this classic.
8 all beef hot dogs
8 buns (I like the heavier brat buns, but pick the ones you like)
4 medium white onions, coarsely chopped
3 green peppers, coarsely chopped
4 Russet potatoes, chopped into 1/2 inch pieces or slices
1 tablespoons, Italian seasoning, divided (use store bought or see our recipe below)
1 teaspoon salt, divided
1/4 cup oil or preferably, bacon grease, divided
Add 1/2 of the oil or bacon grease to your skillet and warm over medium to high heat. Add chopped onions, green peppers, 1/2 tablespoon Italian seasoning and salt, then saute vegetables until they start to caramelize, roughly 10-12 minutes. Remove and save for later. Add remaining oil or bacon fat to pan and bring heat until shimmering, then add potatoes, 1/2 tablespoon Italian seasoning, and 1/2 teaspoon salt and cook potatoes until golden brown, approximately 10-12 minutes. Remove and save for later. Add hot dogs to the pan and saute for approximately 5 minutes or until the skin begins to get crispy.
Place each hot dog in a bun, top with sauteed onions and peppers, then top with sauteed potatoes.
Recipe for Homemade Italian Seasoning
Italian Seasoning is a blend of ground spices used to flavor many Italian dishes. There are many delightful store bought varieties, but it’s also easy (and much less expensive) to make your own.
- 3 tablespoons dried basil
- 3 tablespoons dried oregano
- 3 tablespoons dried parsley
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1⁄4 teaspoon black pepper
- Mix all of the ingredients in a spice grinder OR put in a mortar and pestal and crush.
- This homemade Italian seasoning can be stored in an airtight jar for up to 6 months.
