Spicy Mustard Slaw Recipe
Spicy Mustard Slaw is a great condiment to serve on hot dogs. In the south, there are many family recipes handed down from generation to generation, but this one actually came from a friend of mine who lives in Maine. Her grandmother has been making this spicy mustard slaw for over 60 years. It’s delicious as a side, but it has become her family’s favorite hot dog topping as well.
1/3 cup Dijon mustard
1/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup vinegar (white or apple cider vinegar will do)
1/3 cup vegetable oil
2 to 3 tablespoons hot sauce (Franks is my favorite)
1 teaspoon celery seeds
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1 large head green cabbage, cored and finely chopped (roughly 10 cups)
4 carrots, finely grated
- In a large non-reactive bowl, combine the mustard with the sugar. Gradually whisk in the vinegar, vegetable oil, hot sauce and celery seeds. Season with salt and pepper; the dressing should be highly seasoned.
- Add the cabbage and carrots to the dressing and toss thoroughly. Let sit 10 minutes before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
