Tunnbrödsrulle (Swedish Hot Dog on Flat Bread) Recipe
What’s a hot dog, pink shrimp salad, mashed potatoes and lettuce wrapped in flat bread like a tortilla? It’s Sweden’s contribution to the world’s greatest hot dog recipes. The Tunnbrödsrulle starts with tunnbröd, a Swedish flat bread wrapped around a grilled or boiled hot dog that is in turn, surrounded by creamy mashed potatoes, pink and mayo-heavy shrimp salad, and lettuce. It’s a strange looking hot dog for sure, but this unusual combination of flavors is actually… pretty darn tasty. How could 9.5 million Swedes be wrong? Enjoy!
8 extra long all-beef hot dogs
4 leaves of bib lettuce
4 large thin flat bread
4 cups of cooked mashed potatoes
2 cups small frozen cooked shrimp-thawed
1/2 cup finely green onion
Sauce for shrimp salad:
1 cup sour creme
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon of ketchup
1/2 tablespoon fresh finely chopped dill
To make your own Swedish Hot Dog on Flat Bread, start by mixing the mayonnaise, sour cream, sugar, mustard, ketchup and dill together. Check the taste and add salt, pepper and Tabasco sauce as necessary. Add the drained shrimp to sauce and gently fold together to mix.
Cook the hot dogs in a frying pan or grill. While the hot dogs are heating warm the mashed potatoes in a separate pan or in the microwave.
To assemble your Swedish Hot Dog, place a lettuce leaf on a piece of tunnbröd flat bread (you can substitute two large burrito-size tortillas in a pinch) and top with a scoop of mashed potatoes. Add a generous spoonful of the shrimp-salad, then add two hot dogs. Complete by topping with a generous pinch of green onions. Wrap the flat bread around the filling and enjoy an authentic a Swedish Hot Dog.
