Yum Yum Japanese Steakhouse Sauce Recipe

This is the recipe for Yum Yum Sauce, also sometimes called shrimp or white sauce.  It is a favorite at Japenese steak houses, but it’s one of the best condiments on hot dogs and an essential ingredient in many Asian inspired hot dog recipes.

Tips:  Do not use ketchup, only tomato paste, it is key to the consistency. Also it is important that the Yum Yum Sauce sits in refrigerator overnight before it has been brought to room temperature and before you eat it, otherwise it will not taste the same. We’ve tried several different types of mayonnaise, but Hellmann’s brand, is definitely the best for this recipe.  If you use other brands, or light mayonnaise, your Yum Yum Sauce will NOT taste authentic. My daughter really hates Mayonnaise by itself, but she loves to use Yum Yum sauce using this recipe on hot dogs, sub sandwiches, even steak!

1-1/4 cup Hellmann’s mayonnaise *
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon tomato paste (not ketsup)
1 tablespoon melted butter
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon paprika
dash cayenne pepper

Using a fork or a whisk, blend all ingredients together thoroughly until well mixed and the sauce is smooth.

Refrigerate overnight to allow flavors to blend. Bring to room temperature before serving. The sauce will NOT taste right if you don’t let it sit overnight.

The sauce will keep for up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator, but I guarantee it will be gone by then.
